应用微观经济理论、微观实证分析、公共经济学和中国经济。2008年荣获国际卫生经济学会授予的最高荣誉肯尼斯.阿罗奖。方汉明教授曾担任国际著名经济学期刊International Economic Review 和 Journal of Public Economics的联合主编，以及美国经济学会的旗舰期刊 American Economic Review和其他顶尖期刊的副主编。
