Delineating China’s Metropolitan Areas Using Commuting Flow

讲座内容简介：   

Using novel commuting flow data between pairs of counties/townships, this paper delineates China’s metropolitan areas by applying a simple algorithm that aggregate spatial units if the share of commuters in between exceeds a given threshold. We compare the commuting-based definitions of metropolitan areas and the prefecture cities as well as those defined using night- time light. We explore the characteristics of commuting-based metropolitan areas and find that using prefecture cities underestimates the large city premium along many important dimensions.

谷一桢教授现任北京大学汇丰商学院副教授。他2015年毕业于加州大学伯克利分校，获城市与区域规划博士学位。他主要的研究领域涉及城市经济学、交通运输和应用微观经济学。他的多项研究成果发表于经济学顶级期刊，包括American Economic Review: Insights, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management等。
